Big Tech. Alternatives

With regard to politics - and unsurprisingly most topics seem to have a political slant - then first off perhaps if you are not a journalist, you should maybe question just why you are on Twitter / X, which seems to be a cesspit with insults flying left right and centre from keyboard warriors, most of whom would not say boo to your face. Civility in political debate of years back in the main does not apply to twitter. Twitter did have a reputation of not exactly being a free speech platform. Users with views contrary to the narrative of TPTB often ended up with their accounts being closed or suspended. The October 2020 suspension of the NY Post account for partisan reasons being one example.

Posts were originally limited to 140 characters (now 280*), which perhaps led to a forum of short sharp insults.

Twitter as a microblogging and social networking service is by far the most popular. So moving away may be difficult. Best just quit.

*Blue subscribers can post tweets containing up to 25,000 characters. For unverified accounts, the limit remains 280 characters.

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter (now renamed X) in October 2022 most banned / suspended accounts have been re-instated. At the time he vowed to clear out the bots and make it a more inclusive platform.

Twitter/X Alternatives

  • Gettr - an alternative social media platform and microblogging site.
  • Mastodon - a decentralized alternative to Twitter.
  • Parler - attracts right leaning users. Update Jan 11 2021 - taken down by Big Tech.
